The closest point to the sun, at 6,263 m.
Chimborazo, at 6,263 m, is Ecuador's highest mountain and, thanks to the Earth's equatorial bulge, the point on the planet's surface farthest from its center and closest to the sun. This is a guided summit attempt on glacier terrain, run from start to finish by PEAKS with certified mountain guides.
Our two-day format uses a high camp at 5,300 m with four-season tents to shorten the summit push and reach the glacier fresher. We set off for the top in the middle of the night to stand on the summit at sunrise. We climb by rope team (2 climbers per guide), with high-end technical equipment and a full crampon, ice axe and rope briefing before stepping onto the ice.
This is a serious climb on a glaciated 6,000 m peak: it rewards mountaineers with prior crampon and ice axe experience and solid acclimatization. Chimborazo pairs naturally with Cotopaxi and Cayambe in an acclimatization program along the Avenue of the Volcanoes.
Prior experience with crampons and ice axe, good aerobic fitness and solid acclimatization (ideally 2 to 3 days on lower peaks such as the Illinizas or Carihuairazo). Attending the technical briefing and the training sessions is mandatory.
