The mountain of the strong, icy wind, at 5,020 m.
Carihuairazo, at 5,020 m, is an extinct, heavily eroded volcano in the Western Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes, in Chimborazo province. This is a fully guided two-day, one-night summit attempt via the short route, operated end to end by PEAKS with certified mountain guides.
On day one we set up a high camp at 4,600 m beside the lagoon, after a short ninety-minute trek from the trailhead parking at 3,900 m. Pack horses carry only the camping equipment; each climber carries a light pack with their sleeping bag and pad. In the early hours we head for the summit with a light summit pack.
The trickiest section of the climb is the gully just below the summit, where depending on conditions we use anchor and rappel techniques. It is an ideal first high summit for beginners and a key acclimatization step before Chimborazo or Cotopaxi.
Good physical condition and full technical mountain gear are mandatory. No glacier experience is required, but summit day is demanding and the gully calls for anchor and rappel techniques. Attending the training sessions is strongly recommended.
